FORTIFIED Roof™ Installation — Certified Contractor for Southeast NC

FORTIFIED is not a marketing label. It is a third-party verified building standard developed by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety that requires independent inspection, documented installation practices, and official certification issued by IBHS. Roof Methods holds current FORTIFIED contractor certification and has installed FORTIFIED Roof designations throughout Brunswick County and the Cape Fear region.

The FORTIFIED Roof™ standard was developed specifically to address the gap between what building code requires and what coastal and storm-exposed homes actually need to survive high-wind events. Standard code sets a minimum. FORTIFIED sets a higher, verified bar — and backs it with a five-year designation certificate that your insurer recognizes. For the full explanation of what FORTIFIED is, how the tiers work, and the research behind the standard, see our detailed guide: What Is a FORTIFIED Roof and Why Brunswick County Homeowners Should Care. This page focuses on Roof Methods' specific FORTIFIED offering — what we install, how the process works, and what it costs relative to what you get.

Why Choose FORTIFIED Roof™

  • Insurance premium discounts

North Carolina homeowners with a FORTIFIED Roof designation may qualify for mitigation credits on homeowners insurance. The NC Department of Insurance recognizes FORTIFIED standards, and the 2026 rate settlement includes mitigation credits for coastal NC counties including Brunswick and New Hanover. Contact your insurer with your designation certificate to confirm what discount applies to your policy.

  • NCIUA grant funding available

Brunswick and New Hanover County homeowners insured through the North Carolina Insurance Underwriting Association (NCIUA) may be eligible for grant funding to offset the cost of upgrading to a FORTIFIED Roof through the Strengthen Your Roof program. Grants require pre-approval before work begins — contact your NCIUA agent before starting your project.

  • NCIUA FORTIFIED endorsement

The NCIUA offers a FORTIFIED endorsement at no additional cost to eligible policyholders. If your roof is damaged in a covered storm and needs replacing, the endorsement provides additional funds to rebuild to the FORTIFIED standard rather than standard replacement. Ask your NCIUA agent whether this endorsement is on your current policy.

  • Documented storm resilience

IBHS post-storm field research consistently documents the performance advantage of FORTIFIED homes. Following Hurricane Sally, FORTIFIED Roof homes had 73% fewer insurance claims and 72% lower total losses compared to conventionally built homes in the same storm. In a coastal market with Roof Methods' documented hurricane exposure, this is a material difference in real storm outcomes.

  • Resale value premium

A 2025 peer-reviewed study found that FORTIFIED designation increases home resale value by nearly 7%. A five-year designation certificate is a transferable, verifiable asset — not a selling claim but a documented designation from an independent national organization.

How Roof Methods Installs FORTIFIED Roof™

What to expect from our process and standards for this material.

What Roof Methods Installs

Roof Methods installs to the FORTIFIED Roof™ standard — the foundation designation focused on the roofing system. Required components include a sealed roof deck using self-adhering underlayment at seams, ring-shank nails at enhanced spacing across the full deck, impact-resistant shingles meeting IBHS specifications, wind-tested roof vents, and enhanced roof-to-wall connections. All components are documented by the independent Evaluator throughout the installation.

Evaluator Coordination

The FORTIFIED Evaluator is a separate, independent role from the contractor — they cannot be the same entity on a given project. The Evaluator must be present throughout the installation to document each required component. Roof Methods coordinates Evaluator engagement as a standard part of every FORTIFIED project. You do not need to source or manage an Evaluator independently.

Certification and Insurance Documentation

After installation, the Evaluator submits a documentation package to IBHS. Upon IBHS review and approval, the official FORTIFIED Roof™ designation certificate is issued for your property address. Roof Methods assists with presenting the certificate to your insurer and answering any questions about the installation that the insurer requires for discount processing.

This company came out after the hail storm and got me approved through insurance for a new roof. Josh came and talked to me and walked me through everything — he also got my neighbors approved. The project manager Brian was here before the job started and left after everyone left to ensure everything was just right.

William R.

Josh completed an inspection of my roof due to last week's snow and indicated that my roof was in very good shape and wasn't in need of anything urgent. He just pointed to a couple things to keep an eye on in the future rather than try to sell me on anything. True professional in my opinion.

BP

Brian P.

I have had the opportunity to work with Kolbe, James, Brian, and Dalton and they have all been very helpful and informative. The roof installation was just completed today and looks wonderful — completed in 5½ hours and they cleaned up so well that you wouldn't even know they were here.
